The Joomla core has limitations regarding the criteria we can use to display a collection of articles on the front end. We can create an article collection based on a category and/or tags. But what if we want to use custom fields or native fields, like the creation date or the author, as criteria?

Recently, we introduced new display types for filtering using numerical ranges. Also, it is already possible to filter between dates using the `calendar` display type. We are going to explore how to utilize those features.

The results page of the Smart search allows us to display some fields (image, category, date, etc.) but not custom fields. As the Joomla's custom fields provide a very flexible way for adding extra properties to our content, showing them to the search results can make the results more meaningful.
