No search results could be found for query

JFilters uses the same (indexed) items as the Smart Search.
Hence you have to go to the Smart Search component and press the "Index" button to index your content.

ideally the layout of results needs to match the category blog layout - is that possibe?

Please have a look in our blog.
You will find several posts on how to customize the results page.

Yes if you need a search functionality, the Smart Search has to be used.

If the category filter is either in published or in listening state, it "listens" to the category selection implicitly (from the category view).

To get into account sub-categories after selecting a parent category, go to that filter's "Tree" tab and enable the setting:  Show sub-node contents on parent node selection

So if you have category blog view (one style) then filter results (another style) then finder smart search results (another stlye) it gets quite complicated?

No Smart Search and JFilters use the exact same layout.
If you create a template override for the Smart Search, will be followed by JFilters.

So you just have to modify 1 layout which is actually for so many types of pages (search, category, tags, custom fields and each combination of them).
