sorry this may be a stupid question.
I have read your tutorial and carried out the template override to show the custom fields of a search result. works great!
but can joomla smart search actually search the values of the custom fields? i presumed this would be default?
it is the values in the custom fields that i want to search for (author name etc)

Yes, Smart Search can search into the custom fields in J5.
You just need to enable it from within the custom field (Options > Search Index).
I suppose that you need to re-index your content, if you aleady assigned that custom field to your content.
